We are located in the former Clearwater Lake General Store, built by Henry Kranz in 1912. With the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks running just to the west. The store also served as the railroad station and the Clearwater Lake Post Office. The original store faced St. Mary's Road, in the part of the building that is currently our bar. Later , as the community grew and the automobile replaced the railroad as the primary mode of transportation, the store was expanded and reoriented to face Highway 45. That addition is now the dining room.

Also, in the tradition of country stores, this was a community gathering place. In the early days, Northwoods settlers shopped, exchanged news and, if rumor is correct, shared a beer or two. Many stories of friendship and hospitality are part of the history of the building.

In 1992 the building was purchased and after extensive rehabilitation the Old Stag Restaurant opened to serve the community and guests visiting the Northwoods. Your hosts hope to carry on that tradition.
